Derek Lorenz

Associate Pastor for Youth and Leadership

My name is Pastor Derek Lorenz, I just recently finished up a 12 year career in the United States Army. Throughout my career, I have served in a variety of positions ranging from Pentagon Tour Guide, Team Leader, Squad Leader, Platoon Sergeant, Operations Non Commissioned Officer, Drill Sergeant, Human Resources Technician, Instructor, Weapons Maintenance, and Team member. I have deployed several times as an Infantryman to Turkey, Kuwait, Iraq, and Afghanistan. My tenure in the military has given me a broad range of experiences and skills ranging from managing resources and personnel to leading and supervising small teams. I also am proficient at developing operating procedures and course material which is used for training individuals as well as groups.

While serving, I was active in many roles within my local church and community. I served as a Sunday school teacher, youth director, AWANA Commander, Lead Audio/Visual Tech and Logistics Coordinator. I look forward to broadening my experiences in new areas in ministries as I move out of the military, and continue to develop the next generation of leaders in the Church and the world. I married my beautiful wife Allyson January 8th 2009, and together we have 3 girls: Emma, Amelia and Adeline. They are 8, 4, and 1 years old. My family and I have always felt called to serve in ministry together, specifically youth ministry. Our service in the military has uniquely strengthened our marriage, and due to the experiences, we feel that we are able to provide a very distinctive perspective in mentoring and developing the youth God brings into our lives.

I grew up in a small town in California and became a Christian at the age of 6. I was baptized at the age of 12. I was raised mostly Baptist, and while growing up, I was extremely active in my church due to my parents, however my relationship with Christ didn’t become my own till around the age of 16. I went on a missions trip with Operation Barnabas, and while I was there serving, I dedicated my life to full time ministry.

I believe that youth, especially teenagers, need leadership that not only talks about what it means to be a Christian, but also challenges them to live out their faith in their day to day lives. My passion is to prepare the youth I come in contact with how to live for Christ in our current culture. My experiences in the military and ministry have shown me what the world looks like without Jesus present. The driving force to my passion for youth is the amount of young soldiers that I have served with that used to be highly involved with their local churches but have fallen by the wayside. I feel that as a church we should proactive in preparing our youth to enter our society. As a soldier and leader in the military, I’ve seen and had to deal with the after affects of everything from adultery, drug and alcohol addiction, pornography addiction, PTSD, anger, domestic violence, mental health issues, suicide, bullying, persecution for their faith, to homesickness and looking for their purpose in life. I feel that the church could help youth avoid struggles in these areas if we choose to have the hard conversations while pointing them to Jesus as the answer. All of these experiences have given me the tools to help with the issues that our youth face on a daily basis.
